In wooden packaging material like pallets, dunnage, crates and wooden boxes wood-attacking insects may be found. In order to prevent them from wider spreading and all its consequences, worldwide, regulations have been established, stated in ISPM 15.
Many countries have put quarantine regulations in place to protect their native forests from the introduction of wood pests. In order to prevent the proliferation of differing import regulations, the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) Secretariat, part of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, has issued ISPM 15 (International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures) “Guidelines for Regulating Wood Packaging Material in International Trade” (source: www.smhv.nl).. The SMHV (Foundation Marking Wooden Packaging) is the Dutch authority dealing with the correct application and organisation of the Dutch part of ISPM 15.
